The Top-Grossing Video Games of All Time

Video games sell like hot cakes. Well, they probably sell more than hot cakes, as not everyone likes a hot cake. Some video games were sold in such a high number that the developers needn’t worry about their future projects for at least the next twenty years or so.

Granted, not all the games which are the top-selling ones were published in the last decade; some are much, much older than that.

Regardless, here is a list of the top-selling games of all time, starting from the first place.

Tetris

Tetris is an iconic game that everyone knows of or has played at some point in their lives. It might come as a surprise to some to see it as the world’s top-selling game, but to others, this is definitely an expected occurrence.

Tetris was developed in 1984 by Alexey Pajitnov, an artificial intelligence researcher, working at the time for the Soviet Academy of Sciences. He wanted the game to feature pentominoes, yet he ended up deciding for tetrominoes, which were simpler to implement. He used a text-based display to build the game, and since the screen would fill up quickly, he had to delete the lines, which is now an essential part of Tetris. The name of Tetris came from tetrominoes and tennis. The game went through many different developers from 1986 to this day and is available on all sorts of devices. Tetris sold more than 425 mobile downloads, and over 35 million Nintendo copies.

Minecraft

This is the second most-selling game of all time. Minecraft was developed by Markus Persson, a Swedish developer, now a millionaire. The game is a sandbox game where you can build stuff, fight, collect resources, explore and craft. The game features a 3D procedurally generated world, meaning that you always have something new to explore and find.

The game was launched in 2011, yet the first paid accounts were necessary for beta testing in 2009, hence the early sales numbers. The game is available on multiple platforms and 154 million copies were sold to this day.

Grand Theft Auto V

Rockstar Games’ biggest hit in the Grand Theft Auto series is the latest game, launched in 2013, named Grand Theft Auto V. The game, like its predecessors, features boosting cars, shooting and robbing banks, among other things. The game is so popular to this day, that it is widely used as a benchmark, even though its age is already showing, compared to some modern games, both graphics-wise and optimization-wise. It is Rockstar Games’ top-selling game, coming in at third place with a solid 100 million sold copies.

These are the 3 current top-selling games. Following them are Wii Sports, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow, Super Mario Bros, and many, many more. There are many more top-selling games, many of them going over 10 million. While you have to purchase all of these games, Tetris is free to play on the eponymous site, which can be great if you are in a long line or traveling.
